2026 September Newsletter

Production Sale – 23 September

The stars have aligned in the sheep industry with the wool market EMI lifting from 1197c / kg on June 13, 2025 to 1901c / kg on July 16, 2026, a rise of 704c / kg over 13 months. Over this period the heavy lamb market has gone from 1037c / kg reaching a record daily rate of 1236 / kg. These two commodities have the dual purpose Dohne in an envious position capitalising on quality 19-micron apparel wool and prime lamb carcass’.

This is backed up with the outstanding results by Macquarie long term clients at this years Walgett wether trial (March 2026), the longest continuous running wether trial in Australia, where out of 16 teams, 14 Merino / 2 Dohne, the Berrell family ‘Midgery’ Walgett came first with an overall value of $384.47 per head (Wool $89.64 and Carcase $294.83 per head) and the Currey family of ‘Bogewong’ Carinda 2nd with an overall value of $383.14 per head (Wool $92.30 and Carcase $290.85 per head).

This isn’t the first time the Berrells’ or Curreys’ have won this trial but the first time the only two Dohne teams have come first and second.

An outstanding achievement down to Management, Genetics and classing. Both flocks are classed by Macquarie’s classer James Koster.

I’ve said it before … an across flock ASBV system is a guide, The accurate true value of performance genetics is measured by two systems; on farm trials and sire evaluations. In both these evaluations, sheep are run together under the same conditions, same management providing accurate results …. no algorithm, no outside ‘noise’.

We look forward to catching up with clients throughout the ram selling season. John Nadin

Vale Rob McColl – 03/11/1959 – 07/11/2025

I was saddened by the passing of Rob McColl of Meredith Victoria. Rob was an excellent judge of sheep and wouldn’t consider second best. Rob was the master of achieving high fleece weights along with high growth rates. Rob knew exactly what he wanted ….. structurally spot in , heavy cutting , gutsy wools with excellent carcass attributes. Our condolences to Liz and family.

Supporting the Next Generation

Macquarie Dohne Stud is proud to support the next generation of the sheep industry through practical education and hands-on learning opportunities.

At the, the Dohne Marquee Education Program welcomed students and teachers from Longerenong College and Moama Anglican Grammar for a full day of hands-on learning, providing valuable exposure to Dohne sheep, wool and the wider industry.

This commitment to agricultural education continued with the inaugural Community Bank Gilgandra & Central West Bendigo Bank NSW Dohne Prime Lamb Schools Competition, which brought together 26 schools and more than 280 students and teachers. A very big thank you to the Currey Family – Bogewong Butcher Co, who generously supplied five Dohne wether lambs to each participating school.

Macquarie also recently welcomed 12 students and two staff members from Tocal Agricultural College for a great afternoon at the stud. It was inspiring to spend time with such an enthusiastic group of future agricultural leaders and share knowledge and experience of the Dohne breed.

As part of the Tocal Agricultural College curriculum, students are involved in managing a well-run Dohne flock, providing them with valuable practical experience in sheep production and management.

Macquarie Dohne Stud is proud to play a part in supporting agricultural education and encouraging the next generation of sheep producers and industry leaders.
