The above average seasons have continued the likes we haven’t seen since 98,99 & 2000. The young rams have stood up well having received over 300 mm since shearing with 113 mm of this falling over the last 3 weeks. These can be challenging times but as a Seedstock producer these challenges are important.

With the mid micron wool market floundering coupled with extremely wet seasons, drench and fly resistance, labour shortage and shearer supply, there seems to be a move in some areas from wool breeds into shedding breeds. These breeds, however, do present management challenges of their own. Of all agriculture commodities wool has the most upside and I believe that it will move substantially. A largely unrecognised fact is that Dohnes and Merinos consistently outperform other breeds for meat eating quality and they have no hair fibre meat contamination issues. As supply outstrips demand I think these factors will enhance the demand for Dohne lamb.

On the back of our record breaking sale last year we will offer 230 hogget rams at our 20th sale, the highest ever Dohne ram offering by a single vendor in Australia . This enables clients a large selection and the opportunity to secure rams within the top 40 % of the drop.

In seeking optimal ewe efficiency, all ewes at Macquarie are weighed pre joining and again at weaning. Over the last 10 years we have reduced the average adult ewe body weight by 9kg, without affecting early growth rates (average weaned lamb has increased by 6.6kg over 15 years) or wool cut.

The average Dam Adult BW (pre joining) of this year’s sale team is 65.5kg.

13 Sires from 4 families are represented in the sale offering clients a large genetic pool.

Private selection rams will be available in three grades, $1500, $1200 and $900 from Monday September 26.

This is the first ever sire evaluation using Dohne ewes and we are happy with how our sires are performing.

As I’ve stated before; We are great believers in ASBVs ….. AS A GUIDE. We are breeding sheep, not figures. No ram or ewe is selected on ASBVs. We fine tune with figures after they have been subjectively classed.

Last Years Results Above all expectations our 18th annual ram sale broke a few breed records. 196 hogget rams sold to a top of $7000  and averaged $3518 for a 100% clearance. Rams were sold to NSW, QLD, VIC & SA. Pleasing was the 5 new purchasers but most pleasing was the support from clients we’ve had for up to 20 years who purchased 85% of the offering.

We look forward to catching up throughout the selling season.
