Dohne tops $6250 at Ballarat

Macquarie 11 of 15 rams sold to $6250, averaged $1895.
Dohne – 27 of 46 rams sold to $6250, averaged $1550
Corriedale – 23 of 47 rams sold to $2500, averaged $1120
THE NSW-based Macquarie Dohne stud, Warren, topped the 14th annual Victorian Dohne Invitation ram sale at Ballarat Thursday witha ram at $6250.
In the Corriedale offering it was the Sweetfield stud of Bron Ellis, Mt Moriac, that topped the Helmsman sale at $2500.
The two multi-vendor sales were conducted at the Ballarat showgrounds and attracted solid support. The top priced stud Dohne was a July 2015 drop ram that had a Dohne Base Index Value
of 163.1. The buyers were Max and Ian Pilgrim, Minimay.
Macquarie Dohne principal, John Nadin, Warren, NSW, said the top ram was a 2015 drop ramby MD137021 – “Tom”. Mr Nadin said Tom had been used in seven studs throughout New South
Wales, Western Australia, Victoria and Tasmania and had “quite an impact”.
The sale topping ram had also been used in the Macquarie stud for the past two years. “We like to turn our sires over so it’s time to sell him,” he said. The ram was in the top 10 percent for eye muscle depth at 1.2, fibre diameter at -1.6 and base index of 163.1.
Macquarie was also a buyer at the sale paying $3000 for lot 14 from Alistair and Cheryl Greenshields, Glenaroua, Kilmore.
Coad Pastoral continued on as a volume buyer after purchasing five rams in 2017 they took home eight this year. The buyer paid to $2400 for lot 31, a flock ram sold by Macquarie Dohne. The ram had a post weaning weight of 3.7 and base index of 163.5.
The Dohne breed plans to “ramp it up” in 2019 with a special guest speaker and presentation on the Wednesday prior to the sale.
