What is a dohne?
“A dual purpose sheep with the emphasis on early growth rates, prime lamb carcass, high fertility and quality apparel wool”.
Macquarie has not wavered from this type and we believe that it is imperative that the true dohne remains a distinctive type with a point of difference.
The dohne is the Angus of the sheep industry. Whatever breeding system adopted by commercial sheep producers, the dohne has the ability to increase the gross margins.
Commercial Membership
We encourage all clients to become a commercial member. Commercial membership will keep you informed of up to date stud and commercial events, Global Conference, breed and industry news.
Hamilton Ram Sale
The ram selling season kicked off at Hamilton in early August. Macquarie had a successful sale selling Ace 7141 for $10,000 to a syndicate of Midgery Dohne Stud Walgett and Kardinia Dohne Stud Corowa.
Glenlea Dohne Stud WA and an undisclosed buyer purchased Empire 7176 also for $10,000. Macquarie averaged $7,250.
On Property Sale
140 rams will be offered in single pens on Wednesday 23rd September. The 2014 June and July drop rams have grown out well and have the figures to match.
Riverina Ram Sale
The multi vendor Riverina ram sale at Hay won’t be going ahead this year. Our on property sale offers a larger selection of rams for clients to select from and grade rams will be available immediately after the sale.
Macquarie will continue to sell at Ballarat and Campbell Town multi vendor sales and in addition we will be conducting a private ram selection day at Bairnsdale, East Gippsland Vic on Saturday 24th October at 10am.
Grade Rams
Private treaty grade ram selections commence on Thursday 24th September. 400 rams are available in three grades. For orders please contact John on 0427 474610.
National Council News
The 2016 Global Dohne Conference plans are well under way.
The conference includes two fleece competitions, one at Bendigo and one at Dubbo.
A commercial section (F3 up) is included with attractive prize money. There is also an award for the wool classer who selects the champion fleece.
I encourage all clients to retain a couple of fleeces for this international event. Fleeces can be dropped at any landmark office with a notation stating ‘Australian Sheep and Wool Show’, name and address and month shorn.
Commercial sheep displays will also be a feature in Dubbo. We encourage clients to bring a trailer load of young ewes for display.
A highlight of the conference will be the National Sale conducted during the conference dinner on Friday 22nd July.
More details as they come to hand.
The National Association is working with Sheep Genetics in developing a ‘Ram Select’ App that is relevant to the dohne. Once finalised this App will appear on both Macquarie’s and the association websites.
We look forward to catching up during the ram selling season.
