Dohne breed attracts a new buyer

VICTORIAN DOHNE MULTI-VENDOR SALE
15 of 27 rams offered sold to $3300, av $1687
DOHNE rams sold to a top of $3300, average $1687, at the 11th annual Victorian Dohne invitation ram sale, at Ballarat on Monday.
The top-priced ram, lot 11, born June 2014, post weaning bodyweight (PWT) 5.2, clean fleece weight (CFW) 4.4, fat 0.6, was sold to Wayne and Lyn Culverson, ‘Heatherdale, Orange, NSW.
Superfine woolgrowers, Mr and Ms Culverson have been running a commercial Dohne flock for many years.
First-time bidders, Tim and John Buxton, Buxton Ag, Stratford, were the bulk buyers, going home with five rams, including the second-top priced sire, lot 13, born June 2014, PWT 6.3, CFW -2.1, fat 0.7, $3100.
Buxton Ag added these purchases to two rams bought at Macquarie Dohne Stud’s field day and flock ram sale at Bairnsdale last Saturday. John Buxton said the brothers intended to change all their Merino breeding flock to Dohne bloodlines, beginning at the next joining.

The Buxton brothers followed up their purchases with an additional five rams at the Victorian multi-vendor Dohne ram sale at Ballarat on Monday.
“The growing world demand for meat and the Dohne’s improved fertility and weaning rates attracted us to the breed,” Mr Buxton said.
“We’re choosing to change to Dohnes so we get the added prime lamb value while maintaining the wool clip as our base income.”
